Asda provided the cheapest Halloween-themed shop in this week’s Grocer 33 pricing survey.
Asda’s £80.79 basket was cheapest for 15 items and exclusively so for 12. It sold both the cheapest decorative munchkin and large carving pumpkin, 22-pack of Haribo and Cadbury bonfire logs. J2O was cheapest at Asda too, as was children’s toothpaste.
However, Asda was the only retailer with a basket that cost more than last month (3.2%).
Running towards it was Tesco, with a seasonal basket down 8% month on month, helped by Clubcard promotions on Tequila Rose, Quorn bites and Pringles. Tesco ran 13 promotions, which knocked £10.50 from its total to bring its basket to £83.39, but Asda was 3.1% cheaper.

What is The Grocer 33 and how does it work?
Morrisons was cheapest for hot dogs. Dino’s Little Franks, French’s mustard and finger rolls totalled £6.60, over a pound less than at Asda (£7.74) and £2.48 less than Waitrose (£9.08). It also sold the cheapest mozzarella sticks and Corona Cero lager and, thanks to a rare More Card promotion, the Cadbury variety bag.
These differences weren’t enough to compensate for other areas, however. With a £85.31 basket, Asda was 5.3% cheaper. But for bulk-buyers, Morrisons was far more compelling. When multibuys are factored in on a pro-rata basis, Asda’s lead falls to just 34p.
Sainsbury’s was £1.53 dearer than Morrisons. It ran 12 price promotions, which saved Nectar card holders £8.95 to bring its total to £86.84.
Waitrose was cheapest on sweet chilli sauce and garlic butter, but Asda was 17% cheaper than its £97.36 basket.
Up 14% year on year and 11% month on month, Quorn bites have risen the most of this week’s items, while toilet paper and toothpaste are 12% and 11% cheaper than this time last year.
