Lidl and Aldi had the same price for 26 out of 33 items in our Super Grocer 33 shop. Lidl’s basket cost £50.69, mostly due to the avocados, frozen roast potatoes and premium own-label meringue nests.
For a roast chicken dinner – a whole chicken, parsnips, carrots, red cabbage, frozen roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings – Lidl was cheapest at £8.77.
Lidl also recorded the largest year-on-year price fall of the seven retailers: its basket cost 3.4% less than a year ago.
Aldi (£51.68) was cheaper for a bag of easy peelers and joint-cheapest on a further 21 SKUs.
Further back, Asda (£54.63) cost 7.8% more than Lidl. It price-matched 12 cheapest items and with price cuts totalling 7% was this week’s biggest discounter.
Tesco (£56.84) was 12.1% dearer than Lidl but managed two exclusively cheapest SKUs – the Guinness Draught stout and iceberg lettuce, both on a Clubcard promo. Tesco was, however, 3.7% more expensive than a year ago, the highest inflation rate this week.
Morrisons (£57.08) sold the cheapest Parmigiano Reggiano thanks to a More Card discount. Combined with Aldi and Lidl-matched prices on beef mince, bolognese sauce and spaghetti, this gave it the cheapest four-ingredient spag bol at £9.48.
Sainsbury’s (£58.35) price-matched eight cheapest SKUs but was not exclusively cheapest for any. It was 15.1% dearer than Lidl.
The basket at Waitrose (£69.42) was 37%, or £18.73, more than this week’s winner. But with discounts on spaghetti and red cabbage, Waitrose had two exclusively cheapest items.
Amid the fierce competition, our basket cost an average of 0.6% less than a year ago.
