Aldi is to set a two-bottle limit for its Specially Selected Crémant De Loire between Christmas and New Year, after slashing the price of the own-label tipple.
It is to reduce the price of the sparkling wine from £8.99 to £4.99 from Friday 27 December to Tuesday 31 December. Scottish and Welsh customers, however, will not be able to purchase bottles for less than minimum unit pricing in their respective nations.
And after warning it expects to see “unprecedented demand” following a glowing review by Jane MacQuitty, wine critic at The Times, the discounter has elected to ration supplies of the wine.
MacQuitty, whose review last year led Aldi to run out of supplies of its own-label côtes du rhône in just four days, described Specially Selected Crémant De Loire as “the slashed-price steal of the season”.
“See you in the queue then for this awesome creamy, honey-flecked, quince and golden apple-fruited chenin blanc-based, sparky loire gem,” MacQuitty wrote.
“We want everyone to be able to raise a glass of quality wine this festive period, without breaking the bank,” said Julie Ashfield, MD of buying at Aldi UK. “By lowering the price of our exquisite Crémant De Loire to just £4.99 and introducing a two-bottle limit, we’re ensuring more customers can experience this exceptional sparkling wine at an unbelievable price.”
Earlier this month, Aldi brought back its ‘when it’s gone it’s gone’ côtes du rhône deal for a second year. Between 2 and 8 December, it reduced the price of its Specially Selected French Cairanne from £8.49 to just £3.49.
