Long-running strike action at Encirc has ended after the glass manufacturer agreed to implement health and safety improvements at its site in Elton, Chesire.
Since March, over 100 workers at the plant have staged industrial action, arguing a headcount reduction at the site would lead to issues around staff wellbeing and safety.
Following further negotiations between Unite and Encirc, an agreement has been struck for additional cover to be provided.
After being balloted on the new proposal, Unite members voted in favour of accepting the terms, ending the dispute and cancelling planned strikes due to end this Friday (15 May) and in June.
“Our members at Encirc’s Elton site should be commended for taking industrial action to make their voices heard,” said Unite general secretary Sharon Graham. “It was through standing together that they have been able to improve conditions for themselves and their colleagues. It shows the power in a union.”
Unite regional officer Andrew Johnson added: “We are pleased at this outcome for our members, who had been raising legitimate concerns around safety. It is an excellent result, which will have significant improvements on their health and wellbeing.”
Encirc is a major manufacturer and filler of glass bottles for a wide variety of high-profile alcoholic and low & no-alcohol brands, including Jameson, Baileys, Budweiser and Coors as well as own-label supermarket wines.
The Grocer has approached Encirc for comment.
