Simon Roberts took home £5.43m for the past financial year

Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts saw his annual pay package surpass £5m for the second year in a row for the 2025/26 financial year.

The supermarket’s latest annual report revealed Roberts took home £5.43m for the past financial year, up from his take-home total of £5.18m in 2024/25.

His pay included a £1m base salary, an annual bonus of £1.9m and a £2.42m bonus thanks to the supermarket chain’s long-term incentive plan (LTIP).

Roberts’ base salary will now increase by 3% to £1.04m for the 2026/27 financial year.

Sainsbury’s chief financial officer Bláthnaid Bergin received a base pay of £692,000 in 2025/26, with a £1.07m bonus and £1.5m as a result of the LTIP, taking her total pay to £3.34m for the year.

She has been awarded a 6% pay increase for 2026/27, taking her base pay to £738m. Sainsbury’s said this pay rise reflected her “pivotal role in the successful sale of the bank and her exceptional performance and contribution since her appointment”.

As of 24 May 2026, colleagues in senior management roles were awarded a 3% pay increase, with retail hourly paid colleagues having received a 5% increase in March. At the time, the supermarket giant described the 5% increase as “sector-leading”, with hourly pay having risen to £13.23 per hour nationally and to £14.54 per hour in London.

The bumper pay packets come as full-year sales excluding fuel climbed 4.9% to £25.9bn in the year to 28 February 2026, and Sainsbury’s underlying operating profit came in at £1bn as previously guided.

However, Roberts warned in April that there is “no doubt there will be pressure on food prices” as he urged the UK government to extend energy support to the food sector.

He added that the “very uncertain” situation in the Middle East may impact profits. It guided 2027’s underlying operating profit could lie anywhere between £975m and £1.08bn.

The news also comes after it was revealed last month that Tesco CEO Ken Murphy received a £10.8m total pay package last year, after being awarded over 90% of his possible maximum annual bonus.
