Argos has officially launched its marketplace and unveiled plans to expand its offering to more than 130,000 products by the end of the year.
The general merchandise retailer first set out plans to launch a marketplace in February, saying it would offer customers “an even wider range of products”.
The Trusted Sellers marketplace was initially trialled in July with 40 partners and currently offers more than 70,000 products focused on furniture, home and toy categories.
It will now expand into electricals, gifting, and health & beauty, offering brands such as Medicube, Clarins and Dermalogica.
Leading the division is Timo Scherbaum, who was appointed director of marketplace at Argos in February. He brings previous experience as marketplace MD at European retail group MediaMarktSaturn.
Speaking of the official launch on LinkedIn, Scherbaum described it as a “major milestone” for the business, adding that the marketplace will provide “the trust and convenience customers expect from Argos”.
Argos MD Graham Biggart added: “The feedback on and from our Trusted Sellers has been incredibly positive and we’re looking forward to the biggest expansion of our range in our history. And, critically, because we review every partner, customers can trust that every product meets the standards they expect from Argos.
“Our ambition is simple – to make Argos the place customers can come to complete more of their shopping mission in one visit. Trusted Sellers allows us to significantly expand the range available to customers whilst maintaining the trust, convenience and shopping experience they expect from Argos.”
The launch comes after Sainsbury’s revealed in July that it will sell Argos for more than £120m to a newly-established company formed by retail heavyweights Richard Pennycook, Trevor Strain and Matt Truman.
Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts confirmed Argos would continue to operate inside the supermarket’s stores and that all 14,000 staff in the outlets would transfer to Argos when the transaction completed in February 2027. There are currently 466 Argos outlets located in Sainsbury’s supermarkets and 201 standalone Argos stores.
