The brand’s Matcha milk alternative is made with ingredients including pea protein, spirulina extract, and agave syrup

Swedish plant-based milk business Sproud has launched a ready-to-drink matcha tea as it seeks to tap into burgeoning demand for the beverage.

Its matcha milk alternative is made with ingredients including pea protein, spirulina extract and agave syrup, and contains 2.0g protein per 100ml.

Available in one-litre cartons (rsp: £18.60/6x1l packs) from the brand’s website, the drink has a ‘foamable’ quality and can be served hot or cold.

According to the company, which is co-owned by television presenter Maya Jama, matcha sales generated £38.7m in UK retail revenue in 2024, with the market expected to double by 2030.

“Matcha is having a moment: consumers are increasingly looking for more variety in drinks,” said Sara Berger, CEO of Sproud.

“Providing healthy plant-based alternatives is our identity, so we are thrilled to be able to add Sproud Matcha to our range and keep our customers happy from the first thing in the morning to the last thing at night.”

The vivid green Japanese tea has soared in popularity due to the perceived health benefits of its high antioxidant content.

Appetite has also been driven by social media influencers sharing recipes and examples of the way they brew the drink.

In July, Oatly launched a Matcha Latte Oat Drink, while rapidly growing specialty coffee brand Grind also extended into matcha tea in February.

However, global supply is struggling to keep up with surging demand – it can take up to seven years to develop a fully commercial ceremonial-grade matcha tea field.
