Kent-based Michaels Wholesale Foods has entered liquidation, with all the company’s employees having been made redundant.

The family-run business supplied a wide range of whole foods, confectionery and health food products to independent retailers, including health food shops, farm shops, zero-waste stores, community shops and delicatessens across the south of England.

Sarah Cook and Philip Armstrong of FRP Advisory were appointed as joint liquidators earlier this month. They are managing the realisation of the company’s assets and working with creditors and other stakeholders as part of the winding-up process.

It is understood that the company ceased trading in August after a period of sustained financial difficulty. The company had been unable to return to profitability following a downturn in trading and rising product and operating costs, according to the liquidators.

All 18 employees have been made redundant and are being supported with claims via the Redundancy Payment Service.

“Michaels Wholesale Foods had a long history of supplying independent food retailers in the region,” said Cook.

”Unfortunately, the business was no longer viable following a period of difficult trading. We are now focused on ensuring the liquidation process is managed in an orderly and transparent way, and on supporting creditors and former employees where possible.”
