The Tofoo Co is set to double its production capacity after breaking ground on its new factory.
Located at Malton Enterprise Park in North Yorkshire, the facility will also increase The Tofoo Co’s productive space by 3.5 times and help meet its ambition of producing over 10,000 tonnes of tofu by 2033.
According to the firm, it has been “designed to transform production capabilities, improve operational efficiency and support the business’s ambitious growth plans”.
Once operational, the factory will be able to support sales in excess of £70m.
Harrison Developments Malton is leading the development and construction of the site, while HSBC is supporting the investment alongside The Tofoo Co shareholders and private equity firm Comitis Capital.
Construction began in September and is due to complete in autumn next year, when the company plans to move from its existing site.
“Breaking ground on our new factory is a hugely exciting moment for The Tofoo Co,” said CEO David Knibbs. “We’ve built a strong position in the UK tofu market, and we see significant opportunities ahead as more consumers discover tofu as a natural, versatile source of protein.”
The Tofoo Co said the new factory was “a strategic investment” in its “long-term competitiveness” and comes as the leases on its “increasingly space constrained” existing buildings are due to expire in 2028.
“This investment is about creating the foundations for our next chapter and ensuring we have the capacity, capability and flexibility to meet growing demand from both the UK and Europe,” Knibbs added.
However, as well as growth, the business said sustainability was “a central consideration in the design”.
According to The Tofoo Co, the site presents opportunities to reduce wastewater, generate renewable energy through on-site solar installations, expand EV-charging capacity and recover heat from operations.
Dedicated space will also be set aside for full effluent treatment, strengthening the company’s ability to manage wastewater and advance its longer-term environmental goals.
“It is particularly encouraging to see sustainability considered from the outset,” said HSBC UK senior relationship director Stephen Smith. “The Tofoo Co is a great example of an ambitious UK brand investing for responsible, long-term growth, and we look forward to supporting the business on the next stage of its journey.”
