The Ooho pods enable consumers to swallow the packaging along with the drink, eliminating packaging waste

Innocent has teamed up with London-based sustainable packaging company Notpla to trial edible, seaweed-based pods of its Fiery Ginger shots.

The two-day pilot took place in the hamlet of Nobottle in Northamptonshire and was designed to gauge consumer reaction to the format, with no plans for the products to be made available for retail sale at present.

The Ooho pods enable consumers to swallow the packaging along with the drink, eliminating packaging waste. If it isn’t eaten, the membrane of the pods is designed to biodegrade naturally.

Ooho has previously been used for water, sports drinks, sauces and condiments in applications where packaging is needed for only a short period of time.

Some 78% of people who tried the pods said they would buy them if they were available today, according to Innocent.

“This is about seeing how this new technology can be used, not just in our ginger shots but our other drinks and smoothies, too,” said Innocent packaging lead Andy Wallis.

Pierre Paslier, co-founder and CEO of Notpla, added: “At Notpla, we believe nature has already given us the materials we need to rethink packaging. Our natural packaging range, including our Ooho pods, use seaweed to create a compostable, edible alternatives to single-use plastics, designed to disappear without leaving waste behind.

“Working with great brands like innocent gives us an exciting opportunity to explore how it could work for everyday moments, sustainably.”
